SHOWRESULTS: Tampere,
Finland - 17.05.2003
Juuso moved in with us when he was 12 weeks old, the
date was 16/02/2003.
He moved from a place in Finland called Valkeakoski to our apartment
in Turku, a city in the south of Finland.
A little bit more about
Juuso:
I was born on 20/11/2002, as one of 4 siblings (3 boys and 1 girl).
When I was 12 weeks and some days old I moved in with my new people,
Geir Rune and Linda in Turku. As you can see from the photos, I
am a Brown tabby Maine Coon cat.
My hobbies include:
- Chasing catnip scented mice around - my favorite kind is made
with leather (but now I have lost all four I had of them, so I
now chase my "fury mouse with rattle" instead, Linda
and Geir Rune need to get me more of the leather ones soon! -
or they could launch a search of the flat, to recover the ones
that have mysteriously disappeared...). I have taught my people
to play with me, when I give them a mouse, they throw it across
our flat, and I chase after it. This is a great game!
- I love chasing things attached to strings, like balls of newspaper.
My people run all around the flat, trying to trick me, but I always
get hold of it in the end :)
- Sometimes I will play with the curtains (hm, I wonder if they
will hold my weight if I try to climb them... Must try that someday
soon). But when I do, Linda usually gets angry and yells at me
(I have a trick for that too, I just tilt my head, and look at
her with the biggest, largest, cutest eyes I can make. That usually
works really good :)
- The computer mouse is also a great toy! Whenever Geir Rune or
Linda are at the computer, I will sit on the desktop (or preferably
on the keyboard, but they keep moving me down from it...) and
watch the mouse pointer as it moves over the screen. I haven't
been able to catch it yet, but I am not about to give up any time
soon!
- Playing with/in Linda's hair! She has long thick, hair that
is great to play with while she is holding me!
My favorite foods are:
- I love shrimp, and eat all I get my paws on!
- I also love some Norwegian treats my people got me, some freeze
dried salmon cubes, 100% pure fish!! They are great, but Linda
and Geir Rune complains that they make a mess, so I don't get
them all that often.
- I also like to try new foods, even when Linda or Geir Rune says
that "this is people food..." They are usually right,
but I still want to taste it for myself before I decide. So I
demand to try any food they are eating! This also includes drinks,
I will stick my head in any cup or glass left at the table to
explore the contents. By the way: have all you cats out there
discovered soda? It smells weird, so I am not even going to try
and taste the stuff, but it makes funny sounds! Soda in a glass
will make small popping noises, and you can see the bubbles moving
around in the glass... Fascinating stuff!
About Juuso, by Linda and Geir Rune:
When Juuso moved in, he was a little shy and scared.
But he was not afraid of us, and would come over for some comfort
if he felt insecure about something. He got all the attention he
wanted, and soon began exploring the apartment. He settled in amazingly
fast, and after about two days he acted like he had been with us
all his life! Juuso is a very friendly cat, and he loves people
and attention! Since he is still a kitten, he is very playful at
times, and he does a lot of "clowning around" when playing.
After he moved in there hasn't been a boring moment at our home,
he is always up to something!
When visitors come by, he is always very curious, and rushes to
the door to see who it is. He loves to be carried around the house,
then he can see exactly where we are going, and what we are up to.
And we can forget about closing the door when we are in a room,
he wants to be where we are! When he is in a cuddly mode he is very
sweet and loving, and he purrs so loud that I am sure the neighbors
can hear him!
Although he is pretty well behaved, he does sometimes get into trouble.
Usually he either scratches the couch or the curtains, or plays
with things he is not supposed to. When we clap our hands or say
"NO!" to get him to stop, he will sit down, tilt his head,
and look at us with huge kitten eyes. And yes, that tactic works
- who could resist?!?
A little about us
We are a couple from Norway, who have been living
in Turku, Finland since July 2002. We moved here because we got
a job offer, and thought it would also be a great chance to experience
a different country. We will eventually move back to Norway, but
have no plans to do so yet, as we are happy here in Finland.
Why a Maine Coon?
We discovered this breed about a year ago, from
a page on the internet. We both love cats, but we had never considered
getting a pedigree cat before. However, after reading more about
Maine Coons we realized that we simply had to get one. And so the
search began...
We looked at a lot of homepages for various catteries
here in Finland. 95% of all the kittens we found were either reserved
or spoken for, so it seemed to us that it could be difficult to
find an available kitten. But then one day we found a web page almost
by luck and saw that they had four beautiful kittens, and that they
amazingly were available! We had already decided that we wanted
a male cat, and we fell in love with Juuso from the moment we saw
the photos on the web page.
We contacted the breeders, and reserved him almost immediately after.
And now, here he finally is, over a month after we first discovered
him. It most have been the slowest month in our lives, but he sure
was worth the wait!
A little bit about the
breed itself
Maine Coons are said to have many similarities with
dogs (!), by this it is said that they are very curious, they want
to know what's going on and they will follow you where ever you
go just to get a piece of the action. Generally, they are also very
kind and playful. Other than that, it is one of the largest domestic
cat breed in the world, males easily grow up to 8 or 9 kg, although
we've heard about Maine Coons as big as 14 kg... The breed itself
is from America, however there are many theories about how it first
came there. One that we personally like is that the Vikings brought
ship-cats (Norwegian Forest Cat) and that some of these cats settled
in the New World and eventually became the Maine Coon of today.

recommended reading can be found in the links section and here are
soon good books about the breed:
